The village of Iranda is located roughly 35kms North West of Masindi Town in Kigumba Sub County. Situated in a hilly area, Iranda has 338 residents who are predominately maize farmers. As a rural community there is limited access to basic facilities; the nearest protected water source is located at a health center over 3kms away. It takes more than 40 minutes to walk there over numerous hills. But walking to the health center is the easy part. When asked how long they have to wait in line before filling their jerry cans several local women estimated it to be around 5 hours because demand is so high. Due to the long distance and wait for water, the women will take two 20 liter containers with them to fill. When full each container weighs 44 pounds which the women will then carry back to their homes, perhaps with a child on their back as well. Due to the time consuming and physically strenuous nature of collecting water from the health center source, the majority of households obtain their water from small, contaminated, open pools that often form in the valleys in the area (watch video below). Animal and human feces are easily swept into the pools during heavy downpours experienced during the rainy season. Consuming this water often results in chronic diarrhea and numerous other water-related diseases. The need for a safe water source was immediate. On October 29, 2009 Busoga Trust installed a pump in Iranda. The community no longer has to drink the filthy water that only brought them ill health. Clean water is now the norm and it will improve the health of all the residents of Iranda. Please view the video below to see some of the first users of the new well.
Well Data
Depth: 18 ft
Water Column: 10 ft
Recharge Rate: 4 ft/hr
The water column is the height of the water within the well or the distance between the water table and the bottom of the well. The recharge rate is a measurement of how quickly the well refills after water is removed.
Water Quality Data Before and After Busoga Trust Intervention
Fecal Coliforms (E. coli) per 100 ML
Old Source: 500
BTA Well: 1
Percent Change: -100%
E. coli is a fecal bacteria which causes diarrhea, violent stomach cramps, and fever. It can be transmitted through contaminated food or water. US EPA water standardsrequire Ecoli and similar bacteria be completely absent from 95% of the water samples taken from a system.
Turbidity/NTU
Old Source: 44
BTA Well: 6
Percent Change: -86%
Turbidity is a measure of water clarity; it is an indicator of how much solid mass (silt, sand, clay, algae) and potentially disease-causing organisms a water source contains. Turbidity is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units. In the United States, the allowable standard is 1 NTU; Uganda strives for a turbidity level of less than 15 NTU.
